Author & Coach – Sarah Lavender Smith Ep45

Sarah Lavender Smith is a bit of a renaissance woman and in this episode she talks about how that came about. We chat about her path away from her original journalism career plan and how she found herself a runner much to her own surprise. Then how running became a career of its own.

Sarah and her husband have also followed some not so traditional life and career moves including taking nearly a year off to travel the world with their two kids. I ask her to explain how you can go about doing that financially and whether it was really all it was cracked up to be. For anyone interested in a non traditional career path Sarah’s candor and insights will really be helpful.

Pro Runner – Tim Olson pt2 Ep34

Tim is back for part two talking about the people chasing his record at Western States 100, looking at you Jim Walmsley!

We also chat what it’s like to get pegged as the poster child for things like meditation and diet. I also talk smack about runners way better than me and tell Tim how I destroyed him in a race once…for about 10 minutes…until I didn’t.

Pro Runner – Tim Olson pt1 Ep33

Tim Olson is someone I had hoped to talk to for a while. He is one of the most well known ultra runners out there but he has a lot of things that make him unique. The unique things that some people see are his look with his long blond hair, his dietary habits have gotten a lot of attention as has his embracing of meditation. I wanted to know some other things though like what is it like trying to be a pro runner and having a family? Is racing worth it when you don’t win? And when did he know that he could make a living from this? What is it like to be sort of a poster child of meditation and diet?

Tim also talks about the growing other side of his career his Adventure Mindful retreats. He and his wife Krista have started putting these on with some other friends and partners and I really came away thinking that Tim’s meditation retreats are about the only I’d ever consider going to as he shared his approach which was, find what works for you. Anyway a little plug for his passion project.

Freelance Writer – Matt Hart part2 Ep24

Round two with freelance writer and journalist Matt Hart. We go down some rabbit holes about things like the book Born to Run, straddling the line of fiction,  FKT shoutouts, short attention spans, long form vs writing for web, why I may or may not be a good interviewer and how I got rejected by Kara Goucher. Why Kara, WHY!?

Check out more of Matt’s work at and clips at www.thematthart.com and @thematthart on twitter.

Pro Runner – Anna Frost part 2 Ep 19

Pro runner Anna Frost is back for part 2. We talk running, lessons learned, travel, Hardrock 100, nonsense and she threatens to hit me. The interview went really well!

Frosty is a very impressive woman who has accomplished a ton in the running world but has also embraced the being a woman runner and role model in some really powerful ways. Everything from writing a children’s book called Frosty’s Footsteps (which I bought and she will sigh), to creating a web forum for women to ask each other questions about subject that can be tricky to answer to just in general embracing being open about lessons learned and struggles fought.

Anna is also now leading trips and camps and they look really awesome. Check those out at www.trailrunadventures.com

Pro Runner – Anna Frost part 1 Ep18

Anna Frost has made a career of doing some of the hardest athletic feats you can find and excelling at them. From vertical kilometer races, to adventure races to winning both the Hardrock 100 and The North Face 50…twice! She and a partner were also the first women to complete Nolans 14. Nolans 14 if you aren’t acquainted is a fun little challenge in Colorado of seeing if you can do a line of 14 peaks over 14,000 feet high, with no marked trail, 40,000 feet of elevation gain and a 60 hour time limit.

What I think I liked best about Frosty (her nickname since she was a kid) though is that she has made the sports world a tool for empowering women, inspiring girls, traveling all over the world, avoiding winter and finding cool things to make jewelry out of. Having just had a little girl I can’t help but hope my girl finds some of Frosty’s spirit!

Also if you are at all into trail running check out her adventures and camps at www.trailrunadventures.com because they look AWESOME and yet somehow also affordable.

Pro Runner – Clare Gallagher Ep16

In my third interview exploring the career of pro ultra running I was fortunate enough to talk to Clare Gallagher. She is new, she is excited, she is funny and she one fast runner. Clare is someone just starting her career as a runner, trying to figure out how to position herself, what’s important to her and how in the world do you make enough money to cover rent, much less save for a rainy day. Clare’s biggest feat so far is placing as the first overall woman at the Leadville 100 mile run in 2016. Since then she has signed as an athlete with The North Face as her primary sponsor as well picking up support from a number of other sponsors. We talk how all of this came about, what’s her hopes for the future and really how do you pay the bills sometimes?

Pro Runner – Sage Canaday part 2 Ep14

Sage is back! I tricked him into thinking the mic was off and we went down all the nerd running rabbit holes we could…including Run Rabbit Run, diet, shoes, sponsors, running at the front of the pack and too much of me rambling about myself and comparing myself to Sage. If any of that sounds remotely interesting than listen on!

Pro Runner – Sage Canaday part 1 Ep13

Sage Canaday is a hard man to keep up with. That is most true if you are running, especially in the mountains. It’s also true that trying to keep up with all the ways he is hustling to carve out a career in running is hard. He has sponsors, a YouTube channel with tips and training videos,  a podcast, a coaching business and of course he’s on social media. Oh right and he runs and races…very very fast.

We talk about why he transitioned from road runner to ultra runner and some of the different things he’s done to make running a career, and spoiler alert some of them were not fun! But Sage is someone who has long been passionate and enthralled with running and worked very hard to make a career happen. I think he shares a lot of helpful information for anyone trying to make it in athletic endeavors as well as people just trying any kind of niche enthapeneur career come to life.

Pro Athlete – Anton Krupicka part 2 Ep 11

The second part of my conversation with mountain athlete Anton Krupicka dives into what has ultra running grown into and where might it go and what has Anton grown into and where is he going? In the last five years due to a number of injury setbacks Anton has moved away from competing at top level ultra running races. In the meantime he embraced climbing again and is now exploring a whole new way of getting into the mountains as he dives into speed accents often combining human powered methods of getting to climbs whether that by foot, bike or ski. It’s an interesting world he has opened up to himself and to others as he casts light on endeavors like the Long’s Peak Triathlon and other high end but not well known link ups and human powered ways of getting into nature and the mountains.
